A2 Short Film Analysis (Visions)

1. Shooting material appropriate
Including controlled use of the camera 2/3
All the shots, bar one or two extreme close ups on the floor, look like they have been excited using a tripod resulting in steady controlled use of the camera. Deliberate shaking was also implemented
Attention to framing 1/3
Very little attention has been paid to framing. Over 60% of the shorts where so dark that you couldn't even see what was going on, leaving the viewer confused and in the dark. This could have been deliberate however i don't think it was executed very well. There where a few nice shots towards the end of the short film which obeyed the rule of thirds. We also plan to film our sequence at night, so from this short film we can learn from there poor lighting mistakes and make sure all the shots are well lit.
Variety of shot sizes 2/3
A small variety of shot types
Close attention to mise en scene 2/3
Its clear that some attention has been paid to the mise en scene for example the implementation of a telescope, a variety of locations however i wouldn't say "close' attention. One aspect which really frustrated me was the extremely low key lighting, so low that for the majority of the acting costumes, setting

2. Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer
Making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions 2/4
A variety of different shot transitions have been used however they are not selective which is why i gave them a 2.
Making selective and appropriate use of captions 3/4
There captions have intelligently and professionally implemented into there short film
Making selective and appropriate use of other effects 1/4
I couldn't find any use of special effects.

3. Recording and editing sound with images appropriately 12/16
This was probably one of the better aspects of there short film. Relevant use of sound was implemented which enhanced the visuals. For example the mysterious crackling and the echoing UFO sounds. A wide number of these auditory affects have been used appropriately.

Total marks:25/40
